A FIRST LOOK
The opening.
A short excerpt from The Names We Burn.
The Names We Burn · ARTHUR IVERSON
The door knew Joren Hest by name.
That was the trouble.
Mara Quill crouched on the third-floor landing with one knee in a puddle of rainwater and watched the brass letters above the latch glow a patient blue. JOREN HEST, TENANT. The Crown seal beneath them was smaller than her thumb. It had teeth.
Behind the door, a man breathed as quietly as a man could while hiding from the law in his own kitchen.
“You said you could do it,” he whispered.
Mara did not look up from her tools. “I said I could try.”
“You charged me as if you were certain.”
“I charge everyone as if I’m certain. It improves confidence.”
